There Is Forgiveness (Mar 2014)

Iniquities. There are behaviors/activities which the God of Holy Scripture, the only true God who created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, does not like. Most of those activities are well-known: you shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor, etc. Jesus explains that “iniquities” include murder and hating, adultery and lust, stealing and covetousness. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Paul sums it all up in Galatians 5, “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy . . .” and so on.

A Public Prayer - A Stir (Feb 2014)

I was asked to give the Invocation at the February Polk County Commissioners meeting. Realizing that this was to take place on what we now call President’s Day—which officially is the country’s annual birthday celebration for President George Washington as I understand it—I took to heart words which he spoke in his “Farewell Address” on September 19, 1796.

Gracious God and Father,
Thanks be to You, for blessing us with our American homeland and for the many who have served and continue to serve the people of this nation in the military especially and in government service at every level. Give us, we pray, community leadership reflective of the great presidents of our nation, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose commitment to freedom and strict moral standing set a course of greatness for the people of the United States.

A Final Word on a Matter of Syncretism: Seeing the Big Picture and Calling a Spade a Spade

TO THE PASTORS AND PEOPLE OF THE LUTHERAN CHURCH – MISSOURI SYNOD:

Whereas, it behooves the Christian pastor to rebuke those who contradict the truth of God’s Word, as is clear from St Paul’s instruction to Titus (1:9) that the overseer “cling to the faithful word in accordance with the teaching, in order that he may be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to rebuke those who contradict”; and

Whereas, my three-year attempt to bring my concern through a congregational overture to the attention of the Synod ended in its censorship by the very one about whom I sought to warn the pastors and people of our beloved church; and ....
